Essential Tools

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba has warned against the unauthorised use of blue lights and sirens on vehicles.

He said that such fittings are strictly reserved for the Presidium, with ambulances being the only exception allowed to use sirens and red lights during emergencies. Said Mutamba:

“We have seen a number of vehicles illegally fitted with blue lights or sirens without authority from my office. This is the preserve of the Presidium.

“The only exceptions are ambulances which are fitted with sirens and red lights which should be switched on during emergency cases.

“I am also concerned with vehicles driven on the roads whilst illegally fitted with bar lights in clear contravention of provisions of Statutory Instruments 129/2015.

“My office has directed police commanders to strategically deploy police officers to flush out all motorists, whether public or private driving such vehicles without the requisite authority.

“Those found wanting shall be arrested and vehicles impounded, citizens must observe road traffic laws.”

I had mine fitted with bar lights for rural lighting as I was unaware of the provisions of statutory instruments 129/2015. I then disconnected the wires completely and left the lights as beautifying accessories, as removing these welded lights with a grinder would deface the bar. In this case, does the statutory instrument 129/2015 still apply where the lights are not in use?
