The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced comprehensive measures to ensure public safety during the 45th anniversary of Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.

In a statement released on Wednesday, 06 August, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said adequate manpower had been deployed across the country’s road network and public spaces to ensure smooth and secure holiday travel.

The police warned that decisive action would be taken against motorists who violate road rules and regulations.

This includes the impounding of unroadworthy vehicles, illegal taxis, buses operating without permits, and unregistered or plateless vehicles. Drivers caught under the influence of alcohol will face arrest.

Nyathi also warned public transport operators against overloading vehicles and employing touts who harass passengers.

He urged motorists to cooperate with police officers at checkpoints and patrols to promote road safety collectively.

Furthermore, the Commissioner-General has directed police commanders to patrol residential, industrial, and Central Business Districts, focusing on arresting criminal elements, including those involved in drug peddling.

Nyathi revealed that the ZRP’s crack teams, established to tackle robbery cases, will remain vigilant and responsive to reports of armed robbery throughout the holiday period.

The public has also been advised to refrain from keeping large sums of money at home or in businesses, and to limit the sharing of financial information to prevent leaks to potential criminals.

The police will take strict action against unlicensed liquor outlets and encourage the public to report licensed operators who do not adhere to operational hours.

Nyathi said as schools close for the holiday, parents should monitor their children closely to prevent incidents of rape, drug abuse, and other dangers.

The ZRP has called on citizens to report any criminal activities to the nearest police station or contact the National Complaints Desk at (0242) 703631 or via WhatsApp at 0712 800 197.
