Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Continues With Sluice Gate 5 Leakage Test

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) today announced it would conduct a controlled leakage test on Sluice Gate 5 of the Kariba Dam as part of the ongoing Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Project (KDRP).

The test is scheduled for 5:00 PM CAT today, Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

ZRA said that the test follows the successful completion of refurbishment work on the sluice gate.

This procedure is a standard part of the rehabilitation project and has already been carried out on Sluice Gates 1, 2, 3, and 4.

The leakage test will involve a small, carefully managed release of approximately 1,500 cubic meters of water.

ZRA stressed that this is a normal and necessary engineering procedure designed to ensure the newly refurbished gate functions as intended.

The Authority assured members of the public that there is “no cause for alarm,” as the test is a planned activity.
