The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed the arrest of Grant Chitate, a director of Grant Wellington Thulisa (Pvt) Ltd, in connection with a foreign currency scandal involving unauthorised external payments for gas imports valued at over US$7.6 million.

According to the NPA, Chitate and his company stand accused of violating the Exchange Control Act [Chapter 22:05] and associated regulations by making foreign payments without the approval of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).

The alleged violations occurred between January 2019 and December 2024, during which the company reportedly made payments to import 9.4 million kilograms of liquefied petroleum gas (LP gas), valued at US$7,669,864.12.

However, investigators say no corresponding transactions were recorded in the company’s local bank accounts, raising red flags over the source and legality of the funds used.

The NPA said the local account balances did not reflect the value of the imports, indicating potential illicit forex dealings.

Chitate was arrested on July 30 and has since been granted bail amounting to US$1,000, under strict conditions.

He is expected to return to court on 2 September 2025 as investigations continue.
