Herentals continued their strong run of form with a convincing 3-1 win over Kwekwe United at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday, a result that lifted the Students to sixth on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League log with 38 points.
John Zhuwawo opened the scoring for Herentals in the 19th minute, but Proud Gorekore drew level for Kwekwe United just past the half-hour mark.
However, Herentals reclaimed control before the break through a well-taken effort by Kundai Sangara in the 43rd minute. Prince Mahembe put the game beyond doubt with a third in the 66th minute to secure the win.
In Bulawayo, Highlanders were held to a 1-1 draw by Ngezi Platinum Stars at Barbourfields Stadium. Tinashe Muvhudzi gave Ngezi the lead in the 25th minute, but Bosso found an equaliser late in the game through a powerful header from Reason Sibanda in the 79th minute.
Meanwhile, at Gibbo Stadium, CAPS United’s survival hopes took a hit following a 2-1 loss to Bikita Minerals. Tadiwanashe Murasiramwa and Spencer Mugariri struck for the hosts, while Nyasha Chintuli found the net for Makepekepe.
With 10 matches remaining in the 2025 campaign, the relegation battle is wide open. Just 10 points separate ninth from 17th place, and the traditional “Big Three” — Highlanders, CAPS United, and Dynamos — are all dangerously close to the drop zone.
Highlanders sit on 29 points, CAPS United have 28, while Dynamos, despite a recent win, remain second from bottom on 19 points.
Historically, 40 points is the benchmark for top-flight survival, and time is quickly running out with only 10 games left before the end of the season.
