Econet Users Locked Out As ZEC Limits Voter Registration Checks To NetOne Subscribers

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) appears to have dropped the Econet platform for checking voter registration status.

In its latest Ballot Bulletin, ZEC advised prospective voters in Ward 4 of Chiredzi Rural District Council to verify their registration using the *265# code, a service available only to NetOne subscribers, or via the Commission’s online portal. ZEC wrote:

The commission displays voters’ rolls two days before polling day to enable voters to verify their polling stations.

Voters in areas with by-elections can alsoncheck their registration status using *265# for NET 1 subscribers only or online inspection link, bvrinspection.zec.org.zw.

A similar situation occurred in Chinhoyi’s Ward 14 (Alaska), where a by-election was held on Saturday.

Election Resource Centre (ERC) executive director Ontibile Bhebe said this may limit access for voters using other mobile networks. She said:

The Election Resource Centre expresses concern over the *265# code’s limited accessibility to NetOne subscribers only.

We urge ZEC to rectify this issue and ensure that subscribers of other networks have equal access to voter registration information.
