Zimbabwe’s senior men’s football team, the Warriors, will face Rwanda in a pivotal FIFA World Cup Qualifier (Matchday 8) at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 3PM CAT.
The fixture, which could prove decisive in Zimbabwe’s bid to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup, will once again be played away from home due to the country’s ongoing stadium crisis.
Zimbabwe remains unable to host international matches on home soil after failing to meet minimum infrastructure requirements set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
It has now been five years since the Warriors last played a competitive senior international match in Zimbabwe — a barren run stretching back to 2020, when CAF first imposed its ban.
The nation’s key stadiums, including the National Sports Stadium in Harare, Barbourfields in Bulawayo, and Mandava in Zvishavane, have repeatedly flunked inspections due to poor playing surfaces, inadequate lighting, outdated changing rooms, and the absence of basic safety and security features.
Renovation efforts, particularly at the National Sports Stadium, have been sluggish, dogged by red tape and chronic underfunding.
Despite incremental upgrades, CAF has yet to give the green light for the return of international football, forcing the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to continue renting facilities in neighbouring countries.
Orlando Stadium, the home of South African giants Orlando Pirates, has now become Zimbabwe’s de facto “home away from home.”
While it boasts world-class amenities and draws strong support from the Zimbabwean diaspora, the emotional strain of not playing in front of home crowds remains a heavy burden for both players and fans.
The clash against Rwanda is a must-win, with points becoming increasingly precious as the race to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, intensifies.
ZIFA has called on Zimbabweans based in South Africa to rally behind the team and pack the stands at Orlando Stadium in full voice.
