Police have arrested five suspects in connection with the vandalism and theft of telecommunications infrastructure in Harare, following a joint operation with TelOne officials.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of Tinashe Emmanuel Guramutunhu, Tawanda Nyanadehwe (21), Tatenda Dzova (25), Yusufu Banda (20), and Vincent Mangava (19) after they were allegedly caught cutting underground TelOne cables near Lady Stanley Hostel in Belvedere.

According to the police, on 29 July 2025 officers received a tip-off that a group of suspects had been spotted tampering with TelOne infrastructure at the corner of Bishop Gaul and Samora Machel Road.

A swift response by police and TelOne technicians led to the discovery of the suspects in the act of loading the stolen cables into a Toyota Sienta.

The suspects fled the scene, abandoning a sack filled with TelOne cables.

Investigations led to the arrest of Tawanda Nyanadehwe in the Belvedere area at around 4 AM on 31 July 2025. Nyanadehwe reportedly implicated his accomplices, who were subsequently arrested.

Police recovered 86 kilogrammes of stolen telecommunications cables, along with tools believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes.

Commissioner Nyathi said the suspects are linked to 14 cases of vandalism and cable theft.

The ZRP has reiterated its warning that acts of infrastructure vandalism are a serious offence and will be dealt with decisively. The public is urged to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
