The body of Joseph Masvora (24), a police officer based in Lupane and one of two young men who drowned on Sunday after their boat capsized at Bubi-Lupane Dam in Matabeleland North Province, is yet to be recovered.

The search, led by the Zimbabwe Republic Police Sub-Aqua Unit, was called off late on Wednesday evening and is set to resume on Thursday.

The other victim, Brian Thulani Ngwenya (26), a council employee and recent graduate of Lupane State University, was laid to rest in Lupane on Wednesday.

Speaking to Zimpapers, Lupane District Development Co-ordinator, Ennety Sithole, confirmed that the search for Masvora’s body would continue. She said:

We have not yet found the body of Joseph Masvora. The team led by ZRP Sub Aqua is on the ground searching.

However due to time, the search party stopped yesterday and will continue today.

Locals reported that the two men were on a leisure outing when they allegedly removed their clothes before boarding a council-owned boat.

Their clothing was later discovered neatly placed on the riverbank, prompting confusion and speculation among residents.

Photographs of the recovered items have since circulated on local WhatsApp groups, with many questioning why the men would have undressed prior to getting into the boat.
