Chief Seke, whose real name is Stanley Chimanikire, has attributed rising road traffic accidents to corruption within the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) and law enforcement agencies.
Speaking at the scene of the tragic accident that claimed 17 lives along Seke Road last Tuesday, Chief Seke alleged the existence of a criminal syndicate involving public transport operators, traffic police, and VID officials.
He claimed that many people were now acquiring driver’s licences without completing the full testing process, instead paying bribes to obtain them fraudulently.
Chief Seke further said that commuter omnibuses, buses, and mushikashika vehicles were being waved through police checkpoints despite being unroadworthy.
He alleged that vehicle owners were paying bribes to bypass inspections and enforcement, leading to accidents such as the one that killed 17 people. He said:
We are human beings, let us express our human incarnation and value people’s lives.
The number of lives being lost on roads due to human error is worrying and alarming.
Many accidents can be avoided if we do not allow some motorists to acquire driving licences through bribes.
Many accidents involving kombi drivers can be avoided if all traffic police officers do not allow unroadworthy vehicles to pass through road blocks.
Some unlicensed kombi drivers are even being allowed to pass through checkpoints.
We are killing our own people by such negligence and corruption going on unchecked.
Chief Seke was accompanied at the scene by a traditionalist and spirit-medium, Sekuru Morrison Mafuta.
