A gruesome murder rooted in domestic bitterness has rocked the town of Chegutu, following the arrest of two suspects accused of hiring hitmen to kill a local taxi driver.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Wednesday confirmed that Sekai Apinzi (41) and her tenant Munyaradzi Munyaradzi (24) appeared before the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court and were remanded in custody until 30 July 2025. They were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

According to court documents, Apinzi allegedly requested her lodger Munyaradzi to find someone who could kill her ex-husband, Aleck Sinoia, a well-known taxi operator in Chegutu. The motive stemmed from a long-standing feud over infidelity and property disputes following their separation.

Munyaradzi then contacted Cleopas Gomarara, who enlisted a third accomplice known only as “Jefu.”

The hired men lured Sinoia under the guise of needing a ride to Chegutu Hospital. Once isolated, they ambushed him, deflated the tyres of his silver Honda Fit (registration AEP 5524), and stabbed him multiple times before fleeing. The hitmen allegedly received US$200 for the attack.

Sinoia’s body was discovered in a secluded area near Kaguvi, bearing horrific injuries: stab wounds to the thigh, buttock, and legs, along with a gash above his ear.

His vehicle was found 181 metres away, vandalised with shattered windows and punctured tyres. Blood stains and struggle marks indicated a desperate fight for survival.

During police interrogation, Apinzi reportedly confessed to orchestrating the attack, implicating Munyaradzi and Jefu.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has launched a manhunt for Jefu, who remains at large.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera urged the public to assist with information, assuring confidentiality and protection for informants.
