Five members of the same family from Mabasa Village in Zvishavane are reported to have died in their sleep after inhaling fumes from a fire brazier they had lit to stay warm.
The family had reportedly brought the “mbaura” into their room for warmth during the chilly night, a common practice in many rural homes during winter.
Unfortunately, the brazier is believed to have emitted dangerous fumes (carbon monoxide), leading to the tragic loss of life.
Zvishavane District Development Coordinator, Darlington Chokera, confirmed the incident and said authorities were still piecing together the full details. He said:
We understand five people died at a homestead on Mabasa area. The police have gone to attend the scene and we will get more details then.
The five bodies of the deceased have been ferried to Zvishavane District Hospital for postmoterms.
