Open-heart surgeries for children resumed at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Monday, with 12 paediatric patients scheduled for procedures over the next six days.

The surgeries are part of a specialised programme targeting congenital heart conditions and are being conducted by a joint team of local and Egyptian cardiothoracic surgeons, supported by the government and international partners.

Speaking to ZBC News, Dadirai Ndawala Masiiwa, whose child was selected for the procedure, said:

I came here because my child has a heart problem. We discovered that when she was three years old, she is now five years and 11 months old.

She has been having difficulties in walking and would run out of breath quickly, so now, thanks to this programme, she is scheduled to undergo an operation tomorrow, and I am praying that it will go well.

Another parent, Chipo Maremera, said her child was diagnosed with a hole in the heart earlier this year and was in theatre undergoing surgery.

Vimbainashe Chakanungwa, whose three-year-old daughter was diagnosed in 2023, said they were waiting to go into theatre and hoped the operation would help, as her daughter’s health had been deteriorating.

Last year’s surgical camp successfully treated 10 children with a 100 percent success rate.

This year’s programme continues that effort, offering all procedures free of charge to ease the burden on families and improve access to specialist paediatric care.
