Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced a major upgrade to Victoria Falls’ digital infrastructure ahead of the 2025 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, set for Sunday, July 6, 2025.

In preparation for the influx of visitors, Econet has doubled the number of 5G base stations in the city, from four to eight, to boost mobile connectivity throughout the marathon weekend.

The new 5G sites have been strategically installed at key locations, including Victoria Falls International Airport, Elephant Hills Hotel, and the central business district, to ensure high-speed internet access for athletes, spectators, and residents.

Econet has also enhanced its existing LTE (4G) infrastructure within Victoria Falls and along the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls highway, a critical route for both local and international participants. Econet Deputy CEO, Mr. Roy Chimanikire, said:

The network upgrades are designed to support the event as well as the broader community, local businesses, and the tourism industry at large.

As we prepare to welcome runners and guests from over 34 countries, we are committed to ensuring that Victoria Falls offers world-class digital infrastructure.

Econet has doubled this year’s marathon prize purse from US$25,000 to US$50,000, underscoring the event’s growing prestige and international appeal.

Now in its 18th edition, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon continues to expand in both scale and stature.

The 2024 event attracted participants from more than 33 countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with an even higher international turnout anticipated this year.
