The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) says the country requires approximately US$15 million each year to meet its contraceptive needs.
Speaking during a meeting with members of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committees on Health and Child Care, Budget, Finance and Economic Development, and Investment Promotion in Kadoma on Friday, the council emphasised the importance of the timely disbursement of funds to support contraceptive procurement and related services.
Between 2022 and 2024, the government reportedly spent around US$4.5 million on contraceptives, well below the required annual target. ZNFPC chief executive officer, Farai Machinga, said:
This, however, remains a far distance from offsetting the huge decreases in external financing and the total need for contraceptives of around US$ 15 million per year.
The ZNFPC welcomed the inclusion of family planning services in all medical aid schemes and the ongoing efforts to secure substantial funding from the National Health Insurance (NHI) Fund, describing both as steps in the right direction.
