Washington Makora, a miner at Midway Syndicate Mine in Mberengwa, was electrocuted while descending into a 97-metre-deep shaft.

Midlands Province police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident to the Masvingo Mirror. He said:

We have a case of sudden death of an artisanal miner who died after being electrocuted in a mine shaft. The incident occurred on 9 June 2025 at Midway Syndicate Mine in Mberengwa at about 1100 hours.

Mahoko said Makora and two colleagues had descended into the shaft while two other miners remained above ground.

One of those who stayed behind, Ngonidzashe Gashura (41), left briefly to attend to an electrical fault affecting the mine’s pump system.

Upon returning, he encountered the two miners who had descended with Makora. They informed him that Makora had been electrocuted and had fallen further into the shaft.

A police report was filed, and Makora’s body was later retrieved from the mine. Added Mahoko:

Technical jobs such as fixing electrical fittings like in this case, should always be done by qualified personnel.
