Comair Grounding: Airlines Not Deliberately Hiking Ticket Prices

The Airlines Association of Southern Africa says its members are not deliberately hiking ticket prices in the wake of the Comair grounding.

On Wednesday, the Competition Commission met with airlines to urge them not to inflate prices.

Comair’s flight suspension left a 40 per cent gap in South Africa’s aviation capacity.

The Association’s CEO Aaron Munetsi explains that tickets bought closer to the departure date are more costly than those purchased well in advance.

Aviation expert, Desmond Latham, recently said the rise in prices of flights is a response to the grounding of Comair flights in March this year.

He said prices have already gone up by around 30 per cent and that’s a natural supply and demand.

The carrier suspended Kulula and British Airways flights after running out of money.

The South African government is worried about the impact on tourism.
