Mwonzora Among Senators Who Rejected Constitutional Amendment
The president of the opposition MDC-T, Mr Douglas Mwonzora, is one of the Senators who rejected the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 2 that sailed through this Tuesday.
The Bill sailed through the Third Reading Stage after 65 senators voted in the affirmative, while 10 senators rejected the Bill which will amend the Constitution for the second time. The ten senators who rejected the Bill are:
- Hon. Sen. Chinake Voice
- Hon. Sen. Mpofu B.,
- Hon. Sen. Komichi Morgen
- Hon. Sen. Mavetera Tichinani
- Hon. Sen. Moyo T.,
- Hon. Sen. Eng. Mudzuri Elias
- Hon. Sen. Mwonzora T. Douglas.,
- Hon. Sen. Ndlovu C.,
- Hon. Sen. Phugeni K. and
- Hon. Sen. Rwambiwa Esnath
Female senators from the MDC-T, however, voted for the bill and the party argued that this was mainly because of the bill’s intention to foster gender equality in the country.
ZimLive, claim that some of Mwonzora’s lieutenants indicated that the voting pattern was MDC-T’s strategy to deceive members of the public into believing that the party did not like Constitutional amendments.
NewsDay also reports that with only has 53 senators, ZANU PF needed one vote from the opposition to achieve a two-thirds majority and the affirmative votes came to 65 after the MDC-T voted for the Bill.

The publication further reports that Mwonzora rejected the Constitutional Amendment Bill, he whipped party members at the Monday caucus to ensure that they vote for its passage.
The Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 2 has come under scrutiny and criticism for its intentions to remove the running mate clause and to give the president the powers to make key appointments in the judiciary.
Legal minds in the country and yonder argue that the bill is tantamount to the reversal of democratic principles the Southern African country has been entrenching since independence.
