I Had A Feeling Highlanders Could Not Play Continental Football, That's Why I left - de Jongh

Former Highlanders coach, Hendrick de Jongh has said the decision to leave the Bulawayo Giants for FC Platinum was influenced by his desire to coach a team that plays continental football, The Sunday News reports.

de Jongh said he had a feeling Highlanders cannot play continental football hence his decision to ditch the club for the champions. de Jongh was addressing a press conference in Bulawayo when he said:

I made the decision to go to FC Platinum, very professional club, not so big as Highlanders. The intention first was to stay at Highlanders, only later I flew to consult with my family on what is best for my future. For me as coach, I want to work at the highest level, I had a feeling we cannot play continental football, it was not easy, Highlanders gave me a good offer.

At the same event, de Jongh said he was not happy with CAF barring him from sitting on the bench during a CAF championship because he doesn’t have a CAF A certificate. He said he holds a UEFA certificate which he said is superior to the CAF certificate:

I have UEFA A diploma, UEFA A diploma is much higher than CAF A, I have no doubt, I was technical director for Rwanda FA. In Europe you study one year for UEFA A diploma, in Africa two weeks you score a CAF A diploma.

de Jongh’s lawyer reportedly spoke about FC Platinum not challenging CAF’s decision to not let him sit on the bench and said:

One of the things that the coach was very concerned about was the failure by FC Platinum to challenge what Caf have made. It’s water under the bridge, he still believes that he is more than qualified to sit on the bench but now that the parties have disengaged, it will still remain subject to interpretation.

de Jong disclosed that after his departure from FC Platinum he has received offers from Libya, Hong Kong, and the Namibia Football Association.
