MDC vice president and former Finance Minister Tendai Biti said that the government should facilitate an audit of all donations made towards the fight against the novel coronavirus.
Biti made the remarks while addressing an online meeting organised by the Zimbabwe Coalition of Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) on Saturday. He said:
We have struggled to deal with corruption in Zimbabwe for quite some time now and it is in the best interest of everyone for the government to quickly audit all donations contributed towards Covid-19 as soon as the pandemic is over.
Biti warned that the suspension of Parliament during the national lockdown was also a breeding ground for corruption. He said:
Since January this year at least 103 statutory instruments have been issued in relation Covid-19 and as a trained lawyer I am still battling to understand a plethora of these unclear instruments.
Parliament is the only institution that is allowed to make laws in this country, and its suspension during a state of disaster is catastrophic.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has assured the nation that all donations will be accounted for but there are concerns that some people in government or with connections to the government will abuse the donations for personal gain.
Biti, urikursika kupi? Full audits mist be conducted every 3 months NOT kana corona virus yapera!! What wld be the objective mari yese wld have been misappropriated. Me I think I can see the rationale behind suspended paliament. You MDC MADMEN SPOIL our fun. With no disturbance from poking yr noses into non of yr bussiness we yhe privilled have free hand to use donations according to our imaginations. On a serious note, how can a country be run without a sitting parliament, yet assential services of cooking bread are to contnue. All assential services may be grounded but the govt must remain afloat. No parly no govt. The president alone can never govern the country. Its unheard of.If this what happened then God help us. The countryisnot run by the cabinet orcentral committee of a party! Inemergencies and crisis like this one the legislators must meet frequently to steer the country toclear waters.
