A Mozambican port Mocimboa de Praia has reportedly fallen under Islamic State control after insurgents attacked the barracks of the Defense and Security Forces and hoisted their flag over Mocimboa de Praia,
This was revealed by Ryan Cummings, a political commentator when he posted the development on Twitter and said:
Unconfirmed reports that the flag of the Islamic State has been hoisted over Mocimboa de Praia in Mozambique. If true, would suggest that the town has now fallen under insurgent control. Worrying
Initial reports, again unconfimed, suggest that the seaport and airport has fallen under the control of ASJW. Mozambican military (FADM) appear to be engaged in a counterterrorism operation to reclaim the fallen locality
ASWJ’s offensive on Mocimboa da Praia is very similar to that launched by ISIS affiliates’ in Sheikh Zuwaid (Egypt); Ben Guerdane (Tunisia) & Qandala (Somalia). While black standard was raised in these towns – denoting their capture – they were all liberated from militant control
This was confirmed by the Mozambican Police which told China.org that indeed there had been an attack in the coastal town and said:
Today, at 4:30 am, criminals attacked the headquarters town of Mocimboa da Praia. They attacked the barracks of the Defense and Security Forces and hoisted their flag in the village.
Efforts are currently underway to restore order and public security to the city according to Mozambican authorities.
