The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of the 5 artisanal miners who died at Nugget Gold Mine in Matobo district after a tunnel collapsed on them.
Reports indicate that there was a gold rush on the disused mine after rumours filtered through the community that gold deposits had been discovered.
This resulted in over 1 000 people descending on the mine in search of the yellow metal.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:
We have identified the five people who died after a mine shaft collapsed at Nugget Gold Mine in Matobo. The five are David Luphahla (26), Nkosilathi Dube (26), Promise Dube, Nobukhosi Bhebhe from Old Pumula and Nathaniel Bhebhe from Iminyela Suburb. We had not verified the ages of the other three.
Congratulations for the retrieval operation, yet lest we forget this tragic outcome is a result of poorly performing economy and with a well managed industrial sector, all this could not have been experienced with such frequency. The battle is on formalization of the economy and incite industrialization, development of economies of scale which provide a decent employment and income for all citizens. God bless.
