MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora is not in hiding, contrary to reports.
An MDC official who spoke to Bulawayo24 on condition of anonymity claimed that Mwonzora, in fact, attended the party’s standing committee meeting at Morgan Tsvangirai House in Harare on Wednesday. Said the official:
We have seen the reports that the SG has gone into hiding but I would like to authoritatively inform you that those rumours are false.
He has appeared in public places contrary to the story. The SG was in parliament on Tuesday and he was billed to attend the Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday at the party headquarters.
The SG will also be in Gweru on Friday. You will see that the story is fake and created by people who want to cause alarm in the party. We will not have any of that. We are not undeterred.
Reports earlier in the day indicated that that Mwonzora had gone into hibernation after party youths alleged to be aligned to party president Nelson Chamisa besieged his home and that of co-vice president Elias Mudzuri.
The feared youths, known as the “Vanguard”, reportedly stormed the officials’ homes, accusing them of bankrolling a High Court lawsuit filed by a Gokwe man which ultimately resulted in a ruling voiding Chamisa’s presidency.
