The MDC’s National Council has given Nelson Chamisa the greenlight to appoint almost half of the party’s leadership.
The Council allowed Chamisa to appoint the party’s vice chairperson, deputy secretary-general, deputy treasurer and deputy organising chairperson. The party’s spokesperson, Jacob Mafume revealed in a statement that Chamisa now has the discretion to appoint office bearers for the above positions.
This therefore means that the positions of president, vice president, national chairperson, secretary-general and treasurer general are the only positions left to be contested at the upcoming MDC elective Congress scheduled for the 24th to the 26th of May.
Chamisa is now safe after all provinces mandated him with yet another five years as the party leader. However, those surrounding him, including Tendai Biti, Morgen Komichi, Welshman Ncube, Elias Mudzuri, Lilian Timvieos, Lynette Kore and Trace Muthinhiri are far from safe as they all contest for the three VP posts.
The contest becomes very stiff considering that the national council also resolved to reserve one VP post for a woman.
