MDC MP In Police Custody Over Intraparty Violence

Two MDC members have been arrested in connection with violence that broke out in Chitungwiza on Saturday. Legislator for Zengeza East, Goodrich Chimbaira (47) and Chitungwiza Ward 14 councillor Chengetai Nyagonda (48) were arrested yesteday. The violence is said to have broke out at the home of another MDC member and Ward 17 councillor Fungai Magadzire.

The arrest follows five compaints of public violence angaist Chimbaira and Nyagonda. Chimbaira is also accussed of attempted murder after he tried to run over Jabulani Mutunzi,Chitungwiza deputy mayor, with his Toyota Fortuner. Mtunzi is believed to have dislocated his neck as a result.

Paul Nyathi, Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner, yesterday confirmed the arrest. He said:

I can confirm that police have arrested Goodrich Chimbaira and Chengetai Nyagonda on charges of public violence.

The two are detained at Chitungwiza Police Station.

Reports suggest that the MDC is grounded by violence which is linked to the upcoming May elective congress.

  1. Its high time people should desist from political violence, because the next step is a possible party split. When will MDC A knows that violence does not pay.
