Police Finally Allows MDC Anniversary Celebrations To Take Place But Sets Strict Condition

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has finally granted permission for the opposition MDC Alliance to hold its 19th-anniversary celebrations after twice turning down the request citing the cholera outbreak. The celebrations will be held this coming weekend after opposition leader Nelson Chamisa vowed to defy any police ban alleging that the police had been applying the ban selectively.

In a letter, Harare South district police boss Superintendent Chiroodza told the MDC,

Your notification to hold the meeting has been noted subject to the strict observation of the following instructions. You are expected to control the behaviour of your political party members before, during and after the celebrations.

You should not alter the venue and time of your celebrations and should confine themselves to Gwanzura Stadium only and no other place. Your political members shall not intimidate passers-by and those who have nothing to do with your celebrations.

Rhino Mashaya, who was cited as the convener and Amos Chibaya, the party’s organising secretary will be held accountable for any mishaps that may  happen.
