MDC-T Is Delaying Primary Elections To Avoid Zanu-PF Infiltration

Responding to a question on why the MDC-T led by Nelson Chamisa has not announced a day for primary elections, national secretary for elections Murisi Zwizwai said they delaying announcing the dates to avoid infiltration by Zanu-PF.

He said this during an interview hosted by Ruvheneko Parirenyatwa on Capitalk FM on Monday evening. When asked when MDC-T will hold primary elections Zwizwai said:

We are working on the candidate selection process…We are going to have a National Standing Committee tomorrow at 10 o’clock so that we give a report regarding the progress that we would have made. It is in the standing committee that we will come up with the timelines, probably it should be inside the next two weeks. In the process we are still working on the consensus where candidates should engage themselves and see if they can talk to each other so that we come up with one candidate.

Asked by Ruvheneko to clarify on what he meant, Zwizwai said:

We are going to go through a consensus process. For example you’ll have three candidates in Harare Central Constituency. We would engage the electoral college and bring the candidates together because we have established that there are two things that cause a lot infiltration by the system in MDC-T. The first one is the congress process. We are heavily infiltrated when we go for our congress. Secondly when we do the primary election process we end up having Zanu-PF guys infiltrating us who would after the election defect back to Zanu-PF and start chanting Zanu-PF slogans and maybe in this case they will start wearing the famous scarf. The approach we are going to use is the vision that was given to us by the late Dr Morgan Tsvangirai. We would allow the three candidates to engage each other because what is happening in the candidate election process is that individuals are giving themselves to lead a given constituency or ward so they have to engage themselves first and if they don’t get to a consensus then we go through a primary election process which is open to all candidates.

He said they have a vetting process but Zanu-PF has managed to infiltrate the MDC-T regardless. Zwizwai failed to explain how Zanu-PF infiltrates MDC-T telling Ruvheneko to come to Morgan Tsvangirai House so that she can be taught more on how Zanu-PF does this.
