Zanu-PF Moves Date For Primary Elections, Says There Will Be Joint Campaigns To Ensure Unity

The ruling Zanu-PF party has moved the date for its primary elections from the 5th of May to the 29th of April. The party has also insisted that all its candidates will have to use joint campaigns to prevent bad blood between candidates. Candidates who ignore this directive will be disqualified. Speaking yesterday, Zanu-PF Political Commissar retired Lieutenant-General Engelbert Rugeje,

As a matter of fact, primaries are going to be held on the 29th of April which is next week Sunday that’s the official date of primaries. So for those who are going to campaign officially, we want our members to start campaigning tomorrow.

We have directed that there is nobody who is going to campaign on their own. There shall be a programme that will be laid for all the participating candidates….So if you are in, for example, Bikita East you cannot address the rally on your own. There will be a coordinator in the constituency who will arrange a system of governance where all the aspiring candidates will come together and be allocated time to talk about themselves, to campaign.

We are deliberately doing so in order to avoid the potential to create disunity amongst our own members. There is a tendency when people are campaigning to fight each other.
