Here’s a summary of what has happened so far by date. starting with last week.

• Fri, 14 April:

  • Nurses Threatened that they’d resume their strike on 16 April

• Mon, 16 April:

  • Nurses strike begins, as they accuse Government of reneging on an earlier agreement

  • Nurses Advise that they have reached an agreement with the Govt, which has promised to pay some allowances demanded

  • Health Minister David Parirenyatwa urges nurses to return to work saying that Government has acknowledged their grievances as “genuine and valid”. 

• Tue, 17 April:

  • Parirenyatwa threatens striking nurses with disciplinary action
  • Vice President Constantino Chiwenga releases a statement firing all striking nurses with immediate effect
  • Zimbabweans react negatively to the nurses’ dismissal, accusing the government of not caring.

• Wed, 18 April

  • A political activist accuses Chiwenga of running country like a military barrack.

  • Nurses Respond To Chiwenga: Nothing Has Changed, Strike Will Continue

  • Disregard Chiwenga’s Directive Or We Will Approach The Courts: Nurses Tell Health Services Board

  • Lawyers, Doctors For Human Rights Criticise Chiwenga’s “Dangerous, Irresponsible Response”
