African Union Scoffs At Mugabe’s Claims That He is Not Safe, His Family Is Being Abused

African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat who led a delegation to Zimbabwe last week is reported to have been unimpressed by claims which were made by former president Robert Mugabe. Mugabe is said to have told the delegation that he was forced to resign in November, after a military coup by President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. He also claimed that he was not safe and that his family was being harassed, particularly his wife, former first lady Grace Mugabe.

However, the delegation from the continental body was not impressed by Mugabe’s submissions and responded scornfully. The delegation is reported to have shared this information with president Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration. Mahamat later endorsed Mnangagwa’s government and hailed it for what they termed a “peaceful transition.”  Mnangagwa also called Mugabe and arranged a meeting to discuss the former president’s welfare and benefits.
