Audio: Zimbabweans Are Overrated And Their IQ Is Lower Than The African Average Says HR Consultant Memory Nguwi

Speaking on CapitalkFM Human Resources consultant Memory Nguwi said that Zimbabweans overate themselves and that other nationalities perform better than them. He went on to say that the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of Zimbabweans was lower than the average for Africa.  Reports by UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics and the World Bank have also seemingly debunked claims that Zimbabwe has the highest literacy in Africa. According to the two organisation, Zimbabwe is not even in the top 10 when it comes to literacy.

We thought we would share the interview, although the views expressed are not those of Pindula.

Unsurprisingly, most Zimbabweans were clearly not happy with Nguwi’s assertion and made their feelings known on social media sites. Here are some of the responses:

  1. #screamingforattention by trying to be controversial. I would think he overrates himself by the looks of his LinkedIn profile.

  2. IQ tests are subjective to academic tests versus practical skills tests in a specialised field of application. Most people who fail IQ test have higher chances of success in their fields of specialisation.

  3. Firstly IQ tests are designed for people who are exposed to solving puzzles and other such nonsense. Personally I dont see the connection between IQ and high literacy. One does not require a high IQ to be literate. Africans need to stop being so jealous and be proud of a fellow nation’s achievements.

  4. True..Zimbabweans should know that it’s not all countries that follow the English system but places like Congo and others are in French baccalaureate system where up to form 6 students have 15subjects compulsory. And also go to Universities in Congo and see if you can count them

  5. This information may be true. I once checked the UNESCO list on literacy for sure after our former president kept on going about how we have the best literacy rate in Africa. On the IQ point, based on the one week of Psychology lectures I had :-), IQ when tested seems to measure how well versed one is with their environment and how well they can survive in it. We were given an example of how one IQ test used on an American, if used on an Eskimo, might prove the latter to have a very much lower IQ due to the different environments they live in. If it is a matter of being well versed with environment and how effectively we use resources, an IQ test is not needed to show how much wisdom we lack when we look at what happened after the land reform programme. We can be hardworking and very family oriented, that’s one thing, but when it comes to care about our environment and how effectively we use it, we may very much be in want. #my_opinion

    1. Your argument was sound until you started talking about land reform. The land reform program was not a national decision and hence you cannot include it in a discussion that is national in nature. A few people made that decision.

  6. He was testing the IQ emotionally not factually. Coz the then president was proud of his nation as far as literacy was concerned

  7. IQ tests are very subjective depending on who is being tested and by whose tests. An uneducated person in the rural areas can have a very IQ despite having no exposure to education and therefore no literacy to speak of.

    1. There is a inexricable link sir betewwen IQ and education probably depends on wht were referrring to as education. It cannot be limited to the classroom but includes evry other attribute that can be learned formally of not. Education begins in the formative stages of human life and IQ uses the same to solve problems amd be creative. Hi IQ inventors did not do so without a background education on their inventions so how do you sprt the two. The two are just not directly proportional but they cant be separated.
You can never call an individual that can comminucate and relate with their environment, uneducated, never mind that they are in a rural area. They have learned a lot but hav never read a text book, to call them uneducated is unfair and overates education it self. Its not for schools only to teach but even a mother educates her child untill she can communicate in her mother tongue and knows her name.

  8. Also sometimes a person is only as special as they make themselves. People believe what you make them believe about yourself. If Zimbabweans are overrated thats only because their former president was good at making them feel better than others in that sphere.Americans preach everyday that they are the greatest nation on earth. Everyone knows differently by the levels of poverty in their inner cities , the number of deaths by gun violence but everyone still treats them as superior because they say so. So if Africans look up to us because of a false assertion it only helps our kids to beat their chests and walk tall. Thats a good thing.

  9. It is a fact that when you reduce access to nutrition, healthcare and education you reduce intelligence, development and thus potential.
Given the rapid reduction of living standards induced by ZanuPF it is not unreasonable to see that what he is saying is possible

This is just the proof of what ZanuPF have stolen from every Zimbabwean and their Children and this will take generations to undo.

It is this effect that gives then greater opportunity to control the masses
You are those masses do not be fooled.

  10. These are just grand standing attention seeking statement which lack plausible grounds. To arrive at a true and fair conclusion on level of IQ for a country with millions of people requires an IQ test on the scale of a presidential election. Considering the geographical spread of the majority of Zimbabweans talented human resources, a test at this scale would still not achieve satisfactory results. Leave Zimbabweans to walk tall, they can read and write, if they are popular for being well educate they probably are well educated.

  11. Most of you people are missing some thing here . is IQ the same as literacy ?? literacy is simply measured on the basis of a population (nation) being able to read and write . Its more of a measure of how widespread or accessible education is in Zimbabwe. Remember being educated does not mean high IQ . IQ asses your intelligence and not your level of education . So Memory Nguwi please draw a line between education and intelligence.

    1. Inteliigence in a modern society requires a measure of education. Non of the so called intelligent gurus got there without an education. What use is a well educated or high IQ individual if they cannot solve there or other peoples problems. Education is not limited to the abilityto read and write. It forms the very threads that build your IQ.

  12. Even those that have never been to a formal school and learnt an abcdefg alphabet do have an acquired education. If tested for IQ in a relevant environment they would fare well I think. You cannot seperate IQ from education coz education comes first whether its formal or not and facilitates IQ abilities.

  13. I already said in my first post that there is no link between IQ and literacy but it seems no one was listening. An uneducated person who is iliterate can have a high IQ. This researcher is just not credible by the very fact she/he doesnt seem to separate these two things.

    1. Literacy is just the ability to read and write. But even before a child can read and write they have a measure of education though not formal. Literacy facilitates acquisition of formal education. Í

    2. To call one uneducated suggestes they are devoid of knowledge, is that even possible? They are just less educated and may be illiterate coz of no formall education. Your view of education is myopic as it limits it to classroom acquired education. Evry toddler that responds to their name is educated and even that rural girl who has never been to formal school knows a lot. We cannot be insinuating that education came with the alphabet and the ability to read and write. What would you call the knowledge and understaing of the world that humanity had even before the intoduction of text.
IQ relates to ones ability to recognise and solve relevant problems. High IQ pple are often inventors and their inventions were facilitated by a body of knowledge in the subject of the invention. The best we can say abt IQ and education is that education in its broad sense (formal and i formal) facilitates an IQ but the two are not directly proportional and cannot be seperated.
IQ and GDP may seem appear to be related but please does one lose their IQ once its formed. The rise of GDP can be atrributed in mamy cases to knowledge acquisition and an efficient learning curve which increase production. How abt the fall of GDP. Zim GDP fell a couple of years back and has been struggling to rise shall we then say the same for its average IQ. Please gentleman we have all been to school and know its the earth that rotates around the sun.
There is no plausible objective in Memorys’ utterances on ZIM IQ. Its one of those ‘ Did you know….’ encyclopedia derived remarks.
