Kenneth Kaunda Flies Into Zimbabwe To Convince Mugabe To Step Down

Zambian President Edgar Lungu is reported to have sent former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda as a special envoy to Harare to convince President Robert Mugabe to step down. The Zambians presidents want Mugabe to have a “dignified exit.” Mugabe has been under severe pressure to step down ever since the Zimbabwe Defence Forces seized power in a military takeover last week.

A senior government source told Reuters news agency:

Dr Kaunda used the presidential jet and has already arrived in Harare

Botswana President Ian Khama has also called on Mugabe to step down after advising him that

We are Presidents, we are not monarchs.

Mugabe faces the threat of an impeachment tomorrow, after his own party, Zanu-PF, recalled him as party leader and first secretary of the party after a special Central Committee meeting yesterday.
