Court Refuses To Free Pastor Evan Mawarire. Further Remanded In Custody To 31 January

Pastor Evan Mawarire had his application for refusal of further remand turned down by Harare magistrate Lucy Mungaru. Mungaru further remanded him in custody to 31 January 2019.

Mawarire was arrested on 16 January on allegations of inciting public violence. He had a further charge of treason added a day later by the police.

He is being represented by prominent human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa. His lawyers will apply for bail at the High Court.

  1. The arrest is a sham and the magistrate’s ruling is a disgrace. One needs only a basic education to understand the message of Pastor Evan; stay at home and resist all violence. How does this incite violence? And where in this is the treason?
