‘We Do Not Condone Defiance’ – Chiwenga Tells Doctors

Acting President Constantino Chiwenga said that the government will not be held to ransom by junior doctors whom he referred to as ‘interns’.

Junior doctors embarked on a strike beginning on December 1. The Labour Court later ruled that the strike was illegal and that the doctors had to go to work within 12 hours.

The doctors rejected the ruling and were all suspended by the Health Services Board (HSB). On Thursday, Chiwenga toured Parirenyatwa Hospital and Natpharm. Speaking to journalists during the tour, Chiwenga said

How can the Health ministry take someone who has not completed studies? We will not entertain the wrong things. We cannot call them junior doctors when they have not finished their internship.

We do not condone defiance. The doctors engaged in an illegal strike. That is unacceptable. Those who withdrew their services chose the wrong profession because if they are doctors, the patient is their priority.

You do not withdraw labour in essential services. We ordered them to go back, but they did not listen and the labour court ruled.
