A 38-year-old man from Esidulini Village in Filabusi has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for raping his 29-year-old former girlfriend.
The man, whose name was not disclosed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), appeared before the Gwanda Regional Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that sometime in September 2026, the offender, armed with an axe, went to the victim’s homestead and forced her to accompany him towards a bus stop.
He led her into a bushy area, ordered her to lie on the ground and threatened to strike her with the axe before raping her. He also took US$50 belonging to her.
The victim returned home and reported the incident to her mother. The matter was reported to the police, who attended the scene and carried out investigations that led to his arrest and conviction.
The NPA said it condemns all forms of sexual violence and reiterated that being in a relationship, whether current or past, does not constitute consent to sexual intimacy.
It said no one has the right to force, threaten or intimidate another person into sexual activity and that offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
