Police have launched a manhunt for a 35-year-old man who allegedly killed his mother and a three-year-old child following a dispute over groceries in Chihota, Marondera District, Mashonaland East Province, on Sunday.
The suspect has been identified as Blessed Gatsi, who is said to have recently returned from South Africa.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Gatsi arrived in the village on Sunday night with his children. A misunderstanding is alleged to have broken out between him and his mother over groceries.
It is alleged that Gatsi strangled his mother and then picked up a child who was in the house, identified as three-year-old Leen Gatsi, and threw her against a wall. Both died at the scene.
Gatsi fled and remains at large.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms two murder cases involving a woman and a child in Chihota Village. The suspect, who is the biological son of the now deceased, escaped after committing the offences,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
Police have appealed for information from the public that could lead to his arrest.
