Traffic cameras capture over 4 million violations in Harare

More than four million traffic violations have been captured by the new artificial intelligence-powered electronic traffic management system in Harare, police have said.

Twenty cameras have so far been installed at strategic intersections along major roads in the capital, with Government planning to eventually deploy more than 300 high-tech cameras before rolling out the programme to other cities.

The system allows roads to be monitored continuously, including outside the hours when traffic officers are deployed.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said offences detected by the cameras include driving through red traffic lights, driving against the flow of traffic, picking up and dropping off passengers at undesignated points, speeding, using mobile phones while driving and travelling without fastened seatbelts.

He said the number of offences had leapt from 2.3 million in mid-August to over four million by the end of September — a rise of nearly 74 per cent.

However, the recorded offences are being subjected to a verification process before motorists are penalised, to ensure that only genuine violations result in enforcement action.

“Over four million violators have been detected by the cameras to date,” said Commissioner Nyathi. “We are now working on finalising fine-paying modalities.”

4 million violations speak to the poor quality of the monitoring system.
4 million data points are just noise, unenforceable.

After 2 years they will be a billion violations
