Mhondoro man, 33, jailed 15 years for raping 78-year-old granny

The Chivhu Regional Magistrates’ Court convicted and sentenced a 33-year-old man from Mubaira in Mhondoro to 15 years in prison for raping a 78-year-old woman.

The court heard that on 26 August 2026, at around 7 pm, at Showani Village under Chief Rwizi in Mubaira, the man went to the elderly woman’s homestead.

He forced his way into her room by kicking open a locked door, grabbed her, forced her onto her bed and raped her once.

The woman screamed for help, prompting the offender to flee the scene. Her cries were heard by a member of the public who came to her assistance.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to the man’s arrest and subsequent conviction.

In another rape conviction confirmed by the NPA, the Mutare Regional Court convicted and sentenced Samuel Kubare, 57, of Gondo Village under Chief Mutasa in Honde Valley, to an effective 30 years’ imprisonment for the attempted rape and rape of an 11-year-old girl.

The court heard that the abuse happened in July 2026.

The first incident occurred when the girl was playing at Gondo Village. Kubare approached her and attempted to rape her. She resisted, and he dragged her into the kitchen where he again tried to force himself on her. She continued to resist until he left her alone.

On a separate occasion in the same month, Kubare went to the victim’s home and found her alone. He grabbed her, dragged her into the kitchen and raped her once.

Later that same month, at around 4 pm on another date, he returned to the victim’s house, pushed her into the kitchen and raped her a second time.

The abuse came to light on 14 July 2026, when the victim confided in her grandmother. A report was immediately filed with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), and the girl was referred to Hauna Hospital for a medical examination.

Kubare was convicted on one count of attempted rape and two counts of rape. He received 10 years for the attempted rape and 15 years for each rape count. The sentence for attempted rape was ordered to run concurrently with the two rape sentences, leaving an effective 30-year prison term.
