Zimbabwean Urban Grooves star Rockford “Roki” Josphats has been dragged into fresh controversy after a video of him being pulled by his dreadlocks by a half-naked woman went viral on social media.
In the footage, Roki is dressed in a suit while the woman appears to be wearing only a top and is otherwise naked. She is seen holding him by his dreadlocks and repeatedly demanding payment, saying: “I want my money,” as bystanders try to break up the confrontation.
Roki is heard responding: “They drank my beer. They drank my Hennessy.”
The woman is believed to be a sex worker, although there is no independent confirmation of that. The circumstances leading to the confrontation, including how much money is allegedly owed and what the payment was for, remain unclear. Roki has not publicly commented on the video.
Roki rose to prominence in the early 2000s as one of the pioneers of Zimbabwe’s Urban Grooves movement, alongside artists such as Ex-Q and Leonard Mapfumo.
He broke onto the music scene in 2001 with hits including Seiko and Chidzoka, with the latter earning him Song of the Year at the Zimbabwe Music Awards.
His career has also been marked by controversy, including his disqualification from Big Brother Africa in 2012 following a physical altercation with fellow housemate Maneta.
Despite that, he has remained active in music, has released new material and mentored aspiring musicians and collaborated with international artists including Koffi Olomide and Rayvanny.
