One person died, and 22 others were injured after a Howo truck ploughed into a pedestrian while trying to avoid two vehicles that had been involved in an earlier accident along the Chinhoyi-Chegutu Road on Monday.

The fatal crash occurred at the 82-kilometre peg along the highway on 10 August 2026.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a Howo truck carrying 22 passengers allegedly swerved off the road while attempting to avoid colliding with a Honda Fit and a Toyota Hiace, which had earlier been involved in a minor road traffic accident.

“The Howo truck subsequently struck a pedestrian, who died on the spot. The 22 passengers who were aboard the Howo truck were injured in the accident,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

The ZRP has since urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching accident scenes.

Commissioner Nyathi said motorists who are involved in road traffic accidents must place adequate warning signs, particularly reflective triangles, to alert approaching traffic of the hazard and prevent further accidents.

He said failure to place warning triangles at accident scenes continues to cause secondary crashes, some of which have proved fatal.

The police said investigations into the latest accident are underway, while the injured passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.
