The City of Harare has fined a woman from Kuwadzana who was filmed dumping litter along Bulawayo Road in Kuwadzana 5 Extension.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 11 August, the local authority said the woman was apprehended after a video of the offence went viral on X and other social media platforms.

Harare Municipal Police and Geo Pomona Waste Management traced the offender using the registration number of the vehicle seen in the footage.

“Following a viral video on X and other social media platforms showing a woman who was dumping litter along a road, Harare Municipal Police and Geo Pomona Waste Management officials followed up on the offender using the registration numbers of the vehicle used,” the City said.

According to the statement, the offender was made to collect the litter she had dumped at the Kuwadzana 5 Extension bus stop along Bulawayo Road and deposit it at Geo Pomona Waste Management. She was also ordered to pay a fine.

The City reminded members of the public that it is an offence under the Harare Anti-Litter By-law (2016) to deposit litter anywhere other than in a bin or designated place.

“Harare Municipal Police will not hesitate to follow up on any offender where there is evidence of illegal dumping,” the statement read.

Members of the public have been urged to report, anonymously, anyone seen dumping litter outside designated areas to the Superintendent responsible for the Environmental Patrol Unit on 0772 604 135.
