Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona says the government has secured funding to resume the rehabilitation and widening of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road.

Responding to questions in the National Assembly, Mhona said work on the stalled highway will resume this month.

“We have a 440km road from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls. I am happy that this is one of the roads that we have earmarked and now we have funding to continue the works,” he said.

“So, I want to say, watch the space, and as we move towards August, you will see massive rehabilitation again. Those contractors will be mobilised again to their various sections.”

The Ministry of Transport says 73.4km of the road had been surfaced and opened to traffic as of 30 July 2026, with eight contractors working across different lots.

Bitumen World is out in front with 20.9km completed under legacy works on the Hwange section, followed by Syvern Investment with 13.9km, Tensor Systems with 10.6km and Masimba Holdings with 10.3km.

Fossil Contracting has done 6.2km, Linash Construction 6.1km and Bitumen Resources 5.4km, while Asphalt Products and Bitumen World are yet to record any progress on Lots 6 and 7.

Shereen Thompson, who recently travelled the route, described the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road as “horrendous”.

“Here’s my personal account of driving on the Bulawayo to Victoria Falls. Let me say that upon arrival back in Bulawayo I will need a Physiotherapist, a Chiropractor & a deep tissue massage,” she wrote on Facebook.

“The road is that bad. It is horrendous! Awful! Disgusting! It’s shameful that Zimbabwe would call this a National highway.

“This is non-road. Sometimes we came to a complete stop because there was a lorry coming towards us. The drop-offs onto the gravel are quite sharp & deep.

“We did drive on the sides often, but the holes on the sides are huge. So, my report is ‘Be prepared mentally for a 5-hour journey from Bulawayo to Hwange main camp. Take food & drinks, have a good music selection & just drive.’”
