The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has temporarily restricted access to the Victoria Falls Rainforest following reports of an elephant moving within the area.

ZimParks spokesperson Luckmore Safuli said on Tuesday, 21 July, that the measure was introduced as a precaution to protect visitors, staff and wildlife while reducing the risk of human-wildlife conflict.

He said the restriction would remain in place until the situation had been assessed and it was considered safe to reopen access to the rainforest.

“ZimParks teams are closely monitoring the situation and will advise the public once it is safe to reopen access to the site,” he added.

“Members of the public are urged not to enter the restricted area, approach the elephant, or interfere with ongoing wildlife management efforts.

“All visitors and tour operators are further advised to comply with instructions issued by ZimParks personnel and other relevant authorities on site.”

Safuli said ZimParks remains committed to the safety of the public and the conservation of Zimbabwe’s wildlife heritage.
