Spain clinched their second World Cup crown with a 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, thanks to Ferran Torres’ 106th-minute winner in the 2026 final on Sunday, 19 July.

Torres scored the winner in the 106th minute with his side’s 20th shot of the game. Argentina failed to register a shot on target.

The goal came from a knock-down by substitute Nico Williams, who had earlier had a goal ruled out for a foul by Mikel Merino. Spain had dominated after Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second yellow at the end of normal time.

Lionel Messi was largely anonymous in what is expected to be his final World Cup game, touching the ball 54 times. He also missed out on the Golden Boot to Kylian Mbappe.

The match took three hours to complete with a 27-minute half-time break.

Spain’s victory echoed their 2010 win — another extra-time winner from a Barcelona player, after Andres Iniesta scored against the Netherlands then.

There were unsavoury scenes at full-time, with Argentina’s Nahuel Molina elbowing Rodri and Leandro Paredes kicking Eric Garcia and clashing with Gavi. Paredes, who had been booked soon after coming on at half-time, was sent off after the final whistle.
