A British man of Zimbabwean heritage suspected of murdering his wife and two young daughters in the UK has been arrested in Johannesburg.

Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, 45, also known as Mark, was detained by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Interpol on Friday night in Kensington, Johannesburg.

South African police said he was traced through “swift operational coordination and intelligence-led policing” and was found in possession of a firearm. He is due to appear in court in Johannesburg on Monday.

Tshuma is accused of killing his wife, Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, 42, known as Zandile, and their daughters Natalie, 15, and Nala, five. Their bodies were discovered on Monday at the family home in Great Denham, near Bedford, after concerns were raised that they had not been seen for several days.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised three counts of murder against Tshuma.

Bedfordshire Police said he is a British citizen and has been remanded in custody in South Africa while arrangements are made to return him to the UK.

Police believe Tshuma flew from Heathrow Airport to Zimbabwe on a British passport last Saturday, two days before the bodies were found. Detectives issued an international appeal to locate him.

Det Insp Lee Martin, the senior investigating officer, said the inquiry involved “multiple law enforcement partners”, including the National Crime Agency, Interpol and authorities in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
