The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of Elizaberth Ponji, who is being held in connection with a murder case in which her co-wife, 18-year-old Loveness Zinhu, died at Rwamba Business Centre in Mudzi on 1 July 2026.
Police said the suspect was arrested on 2 July 2026, following allegations that she set ablaze a shop and a bedroom where the victim and her husband, 30-year-old Peter Mudzengerere, were sleeping.
It is alleged that before starting the fire, the suspect poured an unknown substance onto the floor of the building. Mudzengerere managed to escape from the burning structure but later fell unconscious.
In a separate case, police in Chiweshe have arrested three suspects in connection with murder and attempted murder charges arising from a violent attack at Rosa Business Centre on 2 July 2026, at around 2:35 am.
The suspects, identified as Talent Chidamba (29), Maxwell Makuvatsine (21) and Nibert Nhau, also known as “Longers”, are alleged to have acted with four accomplices who are still at large.
According to police, the group allegedly assaulted two men following a misunderstanding at a nightclub during a beer drinking spree. During the attack, 22-year-old Shepherd Achangu was stabbed with a knife and later died upon hospital admission, while the second victim sustained serious head injuries and is receiving treatment.
The ZRP has since launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects, identified as Matthew Matemai, Welly Tatenda Matemai, Nathan Tapiwa Matemai and Tafadzwa Peter, and has appealed to members of the public to provide information that may lead to their arrest.
