While criminals usually rush to leave a crime scene, a 35-year-old Beitbridge man fell into a deep sleep after breaking into a house and raping a 48-year-old woman.
The victim used the opportunity to escape and alert her mother, who lives nearby.
The two women returned and found Adam Sibanda still naked in bed. They then mobilised the community.
Sibanda only woke up when he heard the gathered crowd. He escaped through a window.
Last Thursday, Sibanda of Malala Village under Chief Sitaudze was sentenced to 17 years in prison by Beitbridge magistrate Charity Maphosa. Two years were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.
Prosecutor Olivia Chamutinya told the court that on 21 November 2025, the complainant was alone at home when Sibanda knocked and asked her to open the door because it was raining. She refused.
Sibanda then entered through an open window. The complainant unlocked the door and ran outside, but Sibanda caught her and dragged her back into the house.
He pushed her onto the bed and raped her once, then fell asleep. The complainant ran to her mother’s house for help.
When the two returned to the complainant’s house, they found Sibanda still naked and asleep.
