The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has urged shoppers to be very careful when buying goods online, after a rise in complaints about fake retailers operating on social media and other digital platforms.
CCZ Chief Executive Officer Rosemary Mpofu to ZiFM Stereo News that the watchdog has seen a sharp increase in cases where consumers pay for items that are never delivered, receive goods that do not match what was advertised, or cannot get refunds because sellers stop replying.
“Consumers must be vigilant when engaging in online transactions. We are increasingly receiving complaints from people who have lost money to fraudulent online retailers and social media-based sellers who disappear after receiving payment,” said Mpofu.
Mpofu noted that while Zimbabwe is embracing digital commerce, some online traders are taking advantage of consumers by operating without proper business details. This makes it hard for buyers to check if they are legitimate or to get help when problems arise.
According to the CCZ, many complaints involve transactions on social media pages, online marketplaces and informal e-commerce platforms. Sellers on these sites often give only a mobile number or social media account, which stops working once payment is made.
Mpofu said the Consumer Protection Act [Chapter 14:44] sets safeguards for electronic transactions. It requires online suppliers to share key details, including their identity, physical address, contact information, pricing, delivery arrangements, and terms and conditions.
Mpofu also urged the public to be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and to buy from well-known, established online retailers where possible.
