A 43-year-old man from Magenya Village under Chief Zimuto has died after allegedly being assaulted during a dispute over a US$1 debt for mice he had sold on credit at Dure Business Centre.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the death of Taurai Deredzai and said investigations were ongoing.
“I can confirm the death of Taurai Deredzai of Magenya Village under Chief Zimuto in Masvingo. Investigations are continuing, and we appeal to members of the public to assist with information that may lead to the arrest of Tedious Mupopa, who is still on the run,” said Insp Dhewa.
Police allege that on 7 June 2026, at around 10 am, Deredzai was approached at Dure Business Centre by brothers Moses Mupopa (22) and Tedious Mupopa (20), both from Magaya Village under Chief Makumbe in Buhera. The pair reportedly asked to buy mice on credit, and Deredzai agreed.
Two days later, on 9 June at about 8:30 pm, the three men met again at the business centre. Police say Deredzai demanded payment for the mice, leading to an argument.
It is alleged that Moses and Tedious seized Deredzai’s crutches and used them, together with a whip, to assault him.
Deredzai sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a local clinic. His condition later worsened, and he was referred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital on 11 June, where he subsequently died.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Moses Mupopa. Tedious Mupopa had not been arrested at the time of reporting and remains wanted by police.
