A 26-year-old Harare car salesman allegedly gambled away US$5,500 of his employer’s money at a sports betting shop in Mabvuku.
Kelvin Menyani appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo earlier this week, charged with theft of trust property. He was not asked to plead.
Prosecutors say Menyani was sent to collect US$7,000 from a client who had bought a trailer from his boss, Efiat Kodoya.
Kodoya, who was out of the country, had sold the trailer for US$7,100 last Thursday. He instructed Menyani to take US$7,000 to his wife in Newlands and keep US$100 as a reward.
Menyani collected the cash but did not deliver it, the court heard.
Kodoya discovered the money was missing after phoning his wife. He tried to contact Menyani, who became evasive.
On Saturday, Kodoya called Menyani’s father. Relatives later found Menyani betting at MWOS in Mabvuku. Only US$1,500 was recovered.
The matter was reported to the police, and Menyani was arrested.
